Bangladesh makes her mark to combat climate change

Local GovernmentRural Development and Cooperatives (LGRDMinister M Tajul Islam said all the sectors of government are working relentlessly to address the consequences of climate change. The minister made this remark as a chief guest on a seminar titled Centre on the seminar ‘Climate Resilient Agriculture and Fisheries on Integrated Rural Development for Bangladesh’ yesterday.

The minister stated that in recent years for the hazardous consequences of climate change is noticed.

Along with increasing global warming, rising sea levels, increasing salinity in coastal areas, unpredictable rainfall patterns across the country, droughts, cyclones and natural disasters have negatively impacted millions of people. Climate impacts the lives and livelihoods of vulnerable populations. Our government has started working with national and international development partners to overcome these challenges. The state minister said our beloved Prime Minister highly prioritized the integrated development of villages. Her strong and dynamic leadership, united efforts made to accelerate the rural development, to eradicate poverty, to elevate the quality of the life of villagers and to enhance the production in agriculture.

To enhance climate resilience and DRR, the government has implemented 726 km river-bank protection, 2,123 km river excavation and dredging, 1,266 km embankment, excavation/re-excavation of 181 km irrigation canal and 499 km drainage canal in last 10 years.
