A story of a region’s transformation(lead)

Jubaida Haque Ajanta

Let’s start with a real story – `August 7, 2018, the day was Tuesday. The sad memories of that day still haunt our people of Naria. That day around 2 pm when many people took refuge in lazy sleep after finishing lunch, many people were busy with their own work when a 30 meter area collapsed in the river at Sadhurbazar Launch Ghat of Kedarpur Union of Naria Upazila. Eight shops were lost in the river. At that time, 15 workers were picking up cement in a Mahindra car from a shop there. The workers drowned in the river with that Mahindra car. Apart from this, there were a few other people in the shop and launch ghat. They also drowned in the river.’ This is just one of hundreds of incidents of Padma erosion. In this way, hundreds of houses, pools-culverts, roads, madrasas-mosques, schools-colleges, educational institutions, religious buildings and many thousands of years of traditional and memorable places have gone into the womb of Padma. Padma was once a terror for the people of Naria-Sakhipur. When the monsoons came, there was panic among the people of these areas. This means that houses, houses, residences, cemeteries, educational institutions, health centers were lost in Padma’s bosom! This is why the grave of my parents sank in the river. This is why the hundred-year-old mosque disappeared in the river bed, in which our father, grandfather and grandfather prayed.

Naria’s river erosion is now just a thing of the past. This has been made possible by the sincerity, compassion of a person like AKM Enamul Haque Shamim, the public leader of this region and the love of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Mother of Humanity, for the people of this area. Enamul Haque Shamim is proof that if a public representative is sincere, he can completely change the image of an area. The breaking of this Padma has been going on for hundreds of years, not just one day or two. Perhaps no one in the past has thought like this like Enamul Haque Shamim. No one had time to think about the people of the area. My father A F M Nurul Haque Hawlader also imbued with the love of the people of Shariatpur, he was elected Mamber of parliament (MP) in the first national parliament after independence on the nomination of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and was killed by an assailant just a few months later when he was planning the development of the area. Then the wheel of fate of the people of the area stopped. Even the country moves forward, our area lags behind. If the public leader Sheikh Hasina had not sent Enamul Haque Shamim as the public representative of the area, then perhaps Naria-Sakhipur would have disappeared from the map of Bengal by now. Enamul Haque spent day after day, night after night on the banks of river Shamim to protect the area from Padma erosion. Along with the officials of the Water Development Board, he threw sandbags into the river. By the will of the great creator and the visionary leadership of Sheikh Hasina, Naria-Sakhipur has now joined the mainstream of development. The development of Naria-Sakhipur by Enamul Haque Shamim in the last 5 years with the sincere cooperation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has not been done in the last hundred years. Now, if you go to Sadhur Bazar or Mulfatganj, there is no way to know that it was once a ruined area. The embankment of the river is now crowded with hundreds of tourists. Businesses have developed around the banks of the river, many people have been employed. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government has spent tens of thousands of taka on the development of that area in just 5 years. Many of the works have been completed, many are in progress. Because Sheikh Hasina loves the people of Shariatpur very much. And because of this love, the people of this area have repeatedly voted for the Bangabandhu-Sheikh Hasina’s boat. Boats have never been defeated in that area, and never will be. The hope of the people of the area is that Enamul Haque Shamim will hold the hand of Naria-Sakhipure Haque-Bhasani, AK Fazlul Haque, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib, People’s Leader Sheikh Hasina and Nurul Haque Howladar will surpass all time records in terms of votes. In addition to taking up and implementing the project to protect the entire Shariatpur from river erosion, including Naria-Sakhipur, there has been extensive development in that area. These include- approval of Sheikh Hasina Agricultural University in Shariatpur, 100% electrification of Naria-Sakhipur, provision of power to Charatra, Naopara, Kanchikata, Kunderchar and North Tarabunia through submarine cables, establishment of zonal office of electricity in Naria-Sakhipur and increase in capacity of substations and approval of new substations. MPO registration of every applied school-college and madrasa, construction of buildings and walls of 15 high schools, 82 primary schools and madrasas, self-sufficiency and modernization of all colleges including Nadia Government College and Haji Shariat Ullah College and establishment of Sheikh Russell Digital Lab in all educational institutions, Nadia and Repair and widening of all important roads in Sakhipur, Providing about 5000 deep tube wells in Naria and Sakhipur, sanctioning new hospital in Naria and modernizing Mulfatganj hospital and opening 20 bedded hospital in Tarabunia, water development board sub-division, construction of Pani Bhaban in Naria and Ah Jalil Munsi Dak bungalow in Charatra and 2 more Dak bungalows in Naria and Sakhipur Under construction. These are a brief list of development activities in the last 5 years. Now let’s talk about his humanitarian activities. Here are two of the hundreds of humanitarian works. The wife and two daughters of Sultan Dewan of Jaliahati village in Naria, who were injured in a road accident on April 30, appealed for financial assistance for treatment. Seeing this on social media, Enamul Haque rushed to Shamim Hospital and helped them financially for treatment. Enamul Haque Shamim launched a health care program titled ‘Doctor to the patient, not the patient to the doctor’ when people were afraid to treat or provide services to their loved ones. In addition to the doctors going door to door with the ambulance to provide health care to the patients, he himself delivered the results to the patients’ homes with his own hands. Emergency relief and food items have been delivered to the homes of helpless, jobless people. Manik Darjee of Sakhipur’s Charbhaga Union died while working in Malaysia. As his parents’ names did not match in his passport, complications arose in bringing the dead body to the country. Later, Enamul Haque Shamim made arrangements to bring the dead body to the country and collected 25 thousand ringgit as compensation. A student named Rajib Hasan got the opportunity to study in medical college but could not get admission due to lack of money. Later, he gave him the opportunity to get admission in medical college by donating 50 thousand taka from Begum Ashrafunnesa Foundation established in the name of his mother. In Dingamani, Rupa and her family lost their livelihood and took shelter in other people’s kitchens without getting 3 meals a day. Rupa’s life has not been touched by so much development of the government. After knowing Enamul Haque Shamim went to their house and took overall responsibility for them. He also arranged a respectable job for Rupa. An auto rickshaw driver of Sakhipur Upazila posted a sad status on social media about their uncertain future when the auto rickshaw, the only source of income, was stolen. In that status, he highlighted the precariousness of their family’s sustenance and education. The status caught the eye of humanitarian politician Enamul Haque Shamim. Immediately he sent people to the auto driver’s house and bought him a new auto rickshaw and took the overall responsibility of his children’s education.
