Obaidul Hassan appointed 24th Chief Justice

Justice Obaidul Hassan of the Appellate Division has been appointed the new Chief Justice of Bangladesh.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin appointed him as the 24th Chief Justice of the country. Secretary of the Law and Justice Division Golam Sarwar issued a gazette on Tuesday. Outgoing Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique will retire on September 26. Justice Obaidul Hassan will replace him.  His appointment will come into effect from the date of oath.

Obaidul Hassan was born in an aristocratic Muslim family at Mohanganj in Netrokona on January 11, 1959.  His father Dr. Akhlaqul Hossain Ahmed was liberation war organiser. Dr. Akhlaqul Hossain played important role in drafting the Constitution of Bangladesh.

Mother name of Justice Hassan was Begum Hosne Ara Hossain Obtained B.S.S. (Hons), M.S.S. (Economics) and LL.B. from University of Dhaka, Hassan was enrolled as an Advocate of the District Court, the High Court Division and the Appellate Division on March 18, 1986, October 18, 1988 and August 15, 2005 respectively.

He was elevated as Additional Judge of the High Court Division on June 30, 2009 and appointed Judge of the same division on June 6, 2011. From March 23, 2012 to December 12, 2012 and from December 13, 2012 to September 15, 2015, he worked as member and chairman respectively of International Crimes Tribunal (BD)-2.

He was elevated to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh on September 3, 2020. Justice Hassan delivered judgments on numerous cases including one on Arpita Sompotti Ain, and appointment of Judges to the High Court Division.

He participated in an international conference held in Hong Kong (1991), training namely “Judicial Governance Programme” in Singapore in July 2015, international conference on “International Crimes/State Crimes” in Buenos Ayres in August 2015,

view exchange meeting with the Judges International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Crimes Tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY) at Hague in August 2015. He visited China, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Argentina, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Dubai and Turkey.
