Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad Named BSMMU VC

Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of the university. This appointment was confirmed by a notification from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, signed by Mohammad Kamal Hossain, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Health, Education, and Family Welfare.

The notification, issued on Thursday, states that the appointment of Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad has been made with the approval of the President of Bangladesh, who also serves as the Chancellor of the university. Professor Azad will fill the vacant position of Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at BSMMU, effective immediately.

Professor Azad has been a leading figure in the field of internal medicine and his appointment is expected to bring significant leadership to the administrative affairs of the medical university.

Professor Dr. Md. The notification, signed by Mohammad Kamal Hossain, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Health, Education, and Family Welfare, confirmed that Professor Dr. Azad’s appointment was made with the approval of the President of Bangladesh, who also serves as the Chancellor of BSMMU.

Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad is a renowned expert in internal medicine. He earned his MBBS from Sher-e-Bangla Medical College in 1996, securing the highest marks. In 2001, he received his FCPS degree in Medicine and was honored with the ASHAB Memorial Gold Medal for his outstanding achievements. Furthermore, he is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Edinburgh (FRCP) and the Royal College of London.

Professor Dr. Azad hails from a family with a strong medical background. His father, Professor Dr. Abdul Karim Mollah, was a distinguished medical expert and former principal of Sher-i-Bangla Medical College.

This appointment of Professor Dr. Azad is expected to bring significant leadership and expertise to the administrative operations of BSMMU for the next four years.

In his education life, he received Prof. Abdur Rahman Memorial Award from Bangladesh Physiology and Pharmacological Society in 1991 for obtaining the highest marks in Physiology and Biochemistry. Professor Dr. Azad has served as member of American College of Physicians (MACP), IRB of BSMMU and Bangladesh Society of Medicine, Bangladesh Society of Emergency Medicine. He is the founder of Professor Abdul Karim Mollah Charity Eye Hospital. He is a life member of Bangladesh Medical Association, Association of Physicians of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Society of Medicine, and Bangladesh Rheumatology Society. He served as former Joint Secretary of BCPS Faculty of Medicine and former Member Secretary of International Affairs Committee. Prof. Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad has more than 60 publications in various journals of the country and abroad. He has served as an examiner for FCPS, MCPS, MD, Diploma Post Graduate Examination, FCPS Medicine in College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan and MRCP (UK) in Bangladesh. During his career, he served as a trainee at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College, Senior Registrar at Dhaka National Medical College and Consultant in Medicine at Bangladesh Medical College. He has taught in BSMMU as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and is currently engaged in the noble profession of teaching higher medical education as a professor.
