Magura villagers suffer as bridge collapses

Villagers have been suffering a lot as a bridge over a canal in Magura sadar upazila collapsed recently. The bridge, constructed in 1988 over a canal connecting two villages Kharda Kachundi and Keshtapur under Magura sadar upazila, collapsed due to illegal sand lifting from the canal under the bridge.

Villagers have been demanding repair of the bridge for a long. About 10000 people of Hulinagar, Arpara, Bakdanga, Kharda Kachundi and Pukhuria villages cross the canal using the bridge to travel to Magura town and other places.

Now people cross the canal making a makeshift bridge made of log risking life. The people of the five villages live on farming. They transport their agricultural produce to Magura town for sale crossing over the bridge. But now they face problem in transporting their products.

On contact, water development board executive engineer Sarwar Jahan Shujan said the bridge was constructed with the installation of sluice gates. LGED executive engineer Md Abu Abdullah Al Kabir said, “We will take immediate initiative to construct the bridge for mitigating sufferings of the local people.
