Security forces helicopter goes missing in Panama

A helicopter from Panama’s National Aeronaval Service (SENAN) disappeared Sunday while carrying out a mission in the west of the Central American country, the agency said.

Search efforts were underway to locate the AW-139 and its crew of three, said a statement from SENAN, the branch of the Panama Public Forces responsible for the nation’s naval and maritime security.

It said the aircraft disappeared between Punta Rincon, on the Caribbean coast, and the city of Santiago de Veraguas, further inland and some 250 kilometers (155 miles) from Panama City.

Four aircraft have been dispatched to search for the missing helicopter, whose last communication was at 1600 GMT.
