Jamuna flows above danger level in Sirajganj

The water of the Jamuna river is flowing above the danger level in Sirajganj district due to onrush of water from upstream and heavy rains, submerging low-lying areas of the district and flooding croplands of Char areas.

Meanwhile, the water of other rivers including Karatoya, Fuljor and Baral rivers in the district are rising due to the increase in the water level of Jamuna river.

The water level of the river was recorded 12.93 meters at Sirajganj Town Dam Hard Point on Thursday (August 31) morning which was flowing 3 cm above the danger level on Friday, increasing the water level by 9 cm in the last 24 hours.

On the other hand, Jamuna water levels surged to a record 14.75 meters at Kazipur Point. Jamuna river water was flowing 5 cm below the danger level, increasing the water level by 8 cm in the past 24 hours.

Sirajganj Water Development Board sub-divisional engineer Ranajit Kumar Sarkar said the water level of the river had been rising for the past few days due to heavy rains and onrush of water from upstream, inundating the low-lying areas of Char regions. Meanwhile, the water level of inland rivers has also started to rise rapidly.

‘However, he said there is no fear of major flood although the water may continue to rise’, he added.
