Construction of a foot-over bridge in front of Khulna University (KU) is progressing fast and another will begin soon in front of Govt Brozo Lal College to reduce traffic congestion and smooth movement of the students of these two higher educational institutions of Khulna.
The construction work of the bridge in front of the main gate of Khulna University (KU) has already been started at a cost of Taka 3.93 crore on Khulna-Satkhira highway.
Besides, the construction work of the other foot-over bridge in front of Govt Brozolal College on Khulna-Jashore highway will be started very soon at a cost of around Taka 3.55 crore, Officials of the Road and Highways Department Khulna told BSS yesterday .
Dhaka-based construction companies namely Concrete and Steel Technology Limited and Abid Mansoor Construction have got the two construction works respectively. According to the work order, the construction works of the two over bridges will likely be completed by December 30, 2023, the officials said.
While talking to BSS, H M Shoaib Hossain, Sub-Assistant Engineer of Khulna R&H said, the steel plates which are being made from a workshop in Chattogram, will be installed on 11 pillars of the bridge in front of the KU main gate. Out of the 11 pillars, the basement construction works of five pillars have already been completed.
Md. Anisuzzaman Masud, Executive Engineer of Khulna R&H said, according to the Draft Project Proposal (DPP) the proposed cost of the bridge was Taka 5 crore. But the concerned ministry approved Taka 3 crore 92 lakh 90 thousand.
“The bridge will be very nice to look at after completion. Teachers, students, officers, employees of the university and common people can use the foot over bridge freely and safely as well,” he said .Last year, Vice-Chancellor of Khulna University Professor Dr Mahmud Hossain and Parliament Member of Khulna-2 Sheikh Salah Uddin Juwel gave two letters to the Road, Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader stating the importance of a foot-over bridge in front of Khulna University while Khulna City Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque submitted another letter for a foot-over bridge in front of Government Brozo Lal College at Daulatpur in Khulna city.
When contacted, Sheikh Ashrafuzzaman, President of Greater Khulna Unnayan Action Coordination Committee told BSS that people of Khulna are expecting that the construction work of the two foot-over Bridges will be completed soon by maintaining proper standard within the stipulated time.
“Traffic congestion and road accident will be reduced after completion of two foot-over bridges,” he said.
Terming huge development works are being completed in the Greater Khulna during the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina led Awami League government regime, he said, adding that Country’s South-Western zone were neglected during the BNP-Jamaat regime.
