Unqualified Promotion at Pubali Bank

Allegations have surfaced regarding the promotion of Sharifun Nahar to the post of Deputy Managing Director (DMD) at Pubali Bank, with critics questioning the legitimacy of his appointment and his qualifications for such a senior position.

Despite lacking any relevant banking experience, Nahar has been entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing the principal branch of the 7,000 crore Tk bank. Several employees of the branch, speaking on condition of anonymity, have raised concerns about his professional capabilities. “He lacks the basic banking skills required for this position and even struggles to maintain professional conduct with colleagues,” a senior staff member stated.

The promotion, which occurred without any public interview or apparent vetting process, has raised significant concerns within the banking community. The absence of a formal selection procedure has led some to question the transparency of the management committee responsible for the decision.

On February 25, 2025, Abul Kashem Mridha, a long-serving employee at Pubali Bank’s head office, filed a formal complaint with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) alleging irregularities in the promotion process. The complaint questions not only the qualifications of Sharifun Nahar but also the integrity of the selection process that led to his elevation to such a high-ranking position.

The ACC is expected to investigate the matter thoroughly to determine whether there has been any breach of procedures or misconduct in the promotion of the new DMD.

When attempts were made to contact Sharifun Nahar for comment, the Assistant General Manager (AGM) of the bank answered the phone on her behalf. She explained that “Madam is busy and will call you later,” but no follow-up response was received after several attempts to reach her.

Furthermore, multiple attempts to contact the bank’s Managing Director and Chairman regarding the allegations were unsuccessful. As of now, neither has provided any statements or clarifications concerning the promotion process or the allegations made against Nahar.

Experts in the banking sector have expressed concern over the lack of transparency in such high-profile appointments. Many are calling for a review of the selection processes for top managerial positions to ensure that future promotions are based on merit and relevant expertise.

The case has sparked debate over the accountability of banking institutions and the need for rigorous checks and balances within the industry.

As of now, Pubali Bank has yet to address the allegations publicly, and the investigation by the ACC is ongoing.
