Bangladesh, a nation rich in cultural heritage and resilience, has embarked on a journey of progress since its independence in 1971. As a growing democracy, the country holds the promise of becoming a beacon of participatory governance, inclusive development, and social justice in South Asia. However, achieving a truly democratic Bangladesh requires addressing key challenges such as political polarization, corruption, social inequality, and limited civic engagement. This vision seeks to reimagine Bangladesh as a nation where democracy thrives—not just as a system of governance but as a way of life—ensuring equal opportunities, transparency, and empowerment for all citizens. By fostering a culture of accountability, tolerance, and collaboration, Bangladesh can pave the way for a prosperous, united, and democratic future.
A new political party, Bangladesh Democratic Power, made its formal debut at a grand ceremony held at the Tofazzal Hossain Manik Mia Auditorium of the National Press Club on Tuesday. The event was presided over by the party’s leader, Major General Md. Ehteshamul Haque ndc psc (retd), who articulated the party’s vision of building a Bangladesh rooted in tradition, struggle, and the aspirations of its people.
Addressing the audience, Major General Haque declared, “Bangladesh, a nation born out of struggle, tradition, and dreams, has never bowed to dictatorship, nor will it in the future. Bangladesh Democratic Power is emerging as a beacon of hope and justice for all citizens. Together, we will fulfill the dreams of our ancestors and build a prosperous, people’s democratic Bangladesh free from discrimination.”
In his speech, Major General Haque emphasized the party’s commitment to upholding the revolutionary spirit of the 1971 Liberation War martyrs, living freedom fighters, and those who made sacrifices in the mass uprising of 2024. He highlighted the party’s resolve to meet the aspirations of the current and future generations while creating a legacy of prosperity.
The party outlined its guiding principles and policies during the ceremony, focusing on inclusivity, equity, and national progress:
The party’s ideology will be infused with patriotism, fostering unity, sacrifice, and shared national progress. Diversity, tolerance, and mutual respect will be fundamental values.
Bangladesh Democratic Power vowed to eliminate fear and discrimination for all citizens, including ethnic minorities, and to address divisions based on caste, religion, language, and region.
Full protection will be provided to marginalized communities through an improved social safety net. Poverty alleviation will be prioritized through skill development programs, entrepreneurship support, and empowerment of underprivileged groups.
Modern farming methods and direct support to farmers will reduce reliance on imports and ensure food security.
Energy security will be achieved through sustainable energy policies and innovative solutions. Selected youth will undergo a three-month military training program to prepare them to safeguard national sovereignty.
A modern, accountable, and well-equipped police force will be established to protect citizens’ rights and ensure the rule of law. Democratic oversight will be maintained across all armed forces and security units, including the Bangladesh Rifles, Ansar, and Village Defense Party (VDP).
Major General Haque also reiterated the party’s commitment to building a nation free from divisions and inequalities. “No citizen of Bangladesh will live in fear or face discrimination. Together, we will create a harmonious social environment where every individual can thrive,” he said.
The party leader stressed the importance of a progressive and democratic society where diversity is celebrated, and equal opportunities are ensured for all.
Major General Haque concluded his speech with a rallying call for unity and active participation from the people. “Let us honor the sacrifices of our ancestors by building a nation that reflects their dreams and aspirations. Together, we will pave the way for a prosperous and inclusive Bangladesh.”
The inauguration ceremony saw the attendance of several key figures, including Jahangir Chowdhury, Ubaidullah Mamun, and other prominent leaders of the Bangladesh Democratic Power. The event was marked by a spirit of optimism and determination, signaling the arrival of a new political force dedicated to building a progressive, inclusive, and prosperous Bangladesh.
The party’s debut has already sparked interest across the nation, with many anticipating its impact on the country’s political landscape.
