46pc industrial units yet to pay festival allowance

A total of 4,593 industrial units (or over 46 per cent), including readymade garment factories across the country under the jurisdiction of Industrial Police (IP) did not pay festival allowance until Sunday.

Dhaka, Gazipur, Chattogram, Narayanganj, Mymensingh, Khulna, Sylhet and Cumilla have a total of 9,915 industrial units including textile, garment and jute ones that operate under the IP jurisdiction.

Only 10 per cent or 984 units out of 9915 factories have paid half month wage of June until Sunday noon, according to IP data.

Earlier on June 06, State Minister for Labour and Employment Mannujan Sufian asked the factory owners to pay the workers their wages for the first 15 days of June and festival allowance before the Eid holiday.

Total 963 garment factories associated with Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) out 1,624 and 417 out of the total 699 BKMEA (Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association) member factories have paid festival allowance.

Total 206 out of the 359 BTMA (Bangladesh Textile Mills Association) member factories and 292 out of the 392 BEPZA (Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority) member units have paid festival allowance, according to IP data.

About 3,357 non-RMG factories out of the total 6,751 did not pay festival allowance until June 25 (Sunday) while IP data showed that 40 out of the 90 jute mills under its jurisdiction did not pay the bonus.

Meantime, a total of 303 factories including 119 of the textile and RMG sectors are yet to pay wages for the month of May, according to IP.
