An allegation has been made that Tasfia Mumtaz’s family home in South Banasree, Dhaka, came under attack for a second time. According to the allegation, on Friday (24 July) afternoon, a group of young men entered the house, carried out vandalism, and Tasfia’s father, Mumtaz Hasan Rahmatullah, was injured.
The building’s caretaker, Mamun, said that several young men suddenly arrived at the house around noon. When he tried to stop them from entering, they allegedly pushed him aside, forcibly entered the building, and vandalized the property. He further claimed that Tazfia’s father was injured while trying to prevent the attack.
The building’s driver, Abdul Majed, said, “We were sitting in the waiting room. At around 2:30 p.m., a group of young men arrived. Chanting slogans against Tasfia Mumtaz and her family, they forcibly entered the building and attacked the house.”
Regarding the allegation, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rampura Police Station said that no such complaint had been received by the police so far. He added that legal action would be taken if a complaint is filed.
According to the family, a similar attack was also allegedly carried out by Islamist extremists at Tazfia Mumtaz’s father’s house on 18 July last year. They claim this is the second such attack on the family.
Meanwhile, according to a source, an Islamist leader has alleged that Tasfia acted against Islamic ideals and opposed prevailing Islamic values. The source also stated that calls had been made demanding a death sentence against her.
At the time of the incident, Tazfia’s mother, Selina Rahmatullah, was not at home. She said that her daughter works with various NGOs on women’s empowerment, women’s rights, and raising awareness among underprivileged women. She alleged that these activities have made their family a target of an extremist Islamist group.
Selina Rahmatullah further said, “My daughter was forced to leave the country to save her life. She is currently living in the United States.”
She also alleged that the family has been receiving threats from an extremist Islamist group for a long time.
